Airports in several small southwest and south-central Kansas communities will benefit from a round of grants under the state's 2012 Kansas Airport Improvement Program.
In all, the state selected 30 projects that will enhance safety and service at public use airports to receive part of the $3.54 million in funding, made possible by T-WORKS, the transportation program passed by the Kansas Legislature last May.
The projects will be matched with about $714,000 in local dollars.
The largest single recipient of dollars was Trego County and WaKeeney, awarded $1.2 million to design, reconstruct and widen the runways serving the county of 3,000 people, according to a list provided by the Kansas Department of Transportation.
Other area awards included:
* The Satanta Airport will get $495,000 to overlay runway 3-21. The city must provide a $55,000 match.
